Qing Ming Yu Shang(Rain on Qingming Festival) is a benchmark Chinese-style song written, composed and performed by mainland Chinese musician Xu Song. Released on January 10, 2009, it is included in his debut solo album Custom-Made . As one of Xu Song’s representative early works, this song has become a classic in the youth memories of countless post-90s generations with its classically poetic lyrics, melodious and graceful melody, and sincere emotional expression, and still maintains high play counts on major music platforms to this day.
Set against the backdrop of the Qingming Festival, the song depicts the profound longing for a lost lover and the emotional bond transcending life and death by means of classical imagery such as "rain", "chrysanthemum offering", "West Bridge" and "lotus breeze". Its musical arrangement cleverly blends traditional Chinese musical instruments with modern pop elements. The melody line rises and falls with great rhythm, retaining the melodiousness and grace of Chinese-style music while possessing the catchiness of pop music. Standing out in the early stage of the Chinese-style music boom, it has become a benchmark for Chinese-style songs and influenced the creative direction of numerous subsequent works of the same genre.
