Mu Min Xin Ge(New Melody of the Herdsmen) was composed in 1966 by the renowned bamboo flute master Jian Guangyi. During that period, Jian Guangyi lived and immersed himself in the grasslands of Ih Ju League, Inner Mongolia. Deeply touched by the vast magnificent scenery of the steppe and the simple warmth of the herdsmen, he adopted local folk tune motifs to create this richly ethnic instrumental piece.
Completed amid a special historical background, the work was shelved for a time. It was not broadcast on radio until 1973, after which it spread rapidly across the country and became a household classic of bamboo flute music.The piece perfectly blends the lingering grace of Mongolian long tunes with the lively cheerfulness of Mongolian short tunes. Its melodic lines flow gently like rivers winding across the grassland.
The prelude unfolds freely on a natural modal scale in yu mode, painting a vivid picture of lush green meadows and flocks of cattle and sheep. The slow tempo section features deep, sustained melodies, evoking herdsmen riding leisurely across the grassland. The lively allegro with nimble rhythmic jumps vividly portrays the jubilant scene of herdsmen whipping their horses and galloping freely over the steppe.This score is sourced from the internet.
