Yangbian Cuima Yunliangmang(Delivering Public Grain with Horse Carts) is a classic dizi solo composed by the renowned dizi performer Wei Xianzhong in October 1969, when he went to the countryside in Panjin, Liaoning to take part in autumn harvest labor. Drawing on Northeast Chinese folk tune themes Mantanghong and Yinfengsuo as creative materials, the piece vividly depicts the bustling scene of farmers driving carts, whipping their horses, and happily delivering public grain during the harvest season. With a lively and uplifting melody and strong imagery, it has become a household timeless classic in Chinese national orchestral music.
As a benchmark representative work of the new-school dizi style, the piece adopts an ABA three-part form with an introduction. It skillfully integrates professional bamboo dizi techniques including flutter tongue, portamento, glissando, double tonguing and triple tonguing. Through the rhythmic contrast of 2/4 time allegro and moderato, it realistically imitates the galloping of horses and the rolling of cart wheels, delivering powerful auditory appeal.
Well-structured in arrangement, bright and resonant in tone, and rich in local folk charm, this composition is not only an essential classic for beginner dizi learners, but also a frequently performed repertoire in cultural galas and folk music concerts.
