Yu Die(Rain Butterfly) is a classic Mandopop song released in 1998. Performed by Li Yijun, with lyrics written by Xu Changde and Qiong Yao, music composed by Zhang Yu, and arrangement done by Tu Huiyuan, it served as the ending theme song for the TV series My Fair Princess I . Included in Li Yijun’s album Oath and Lie , the song has become a collective memory for people born in the 1980s and 1990s alongside the TV series, and is still widely sung and covered to this day.
The creation of Rain Butterfly originated from a dramatic adaptation. Initially titled Desert Loneliness , the song was written by Xu Changde and composed by Zhang Yu. Li Yijun had already finished recording it, planning to use it as the lead single for her new album. However, Qiong Yao insisted that “the soundtrack of my drama must feature my own lyrics” and demanded re-writing the lyrics for My Fair Princess I . Qiong Yao and Xu Changde re-completed the lyrics overnight and renamed the song Rain Butterfly . Though Li Yijun was reluctant at first, she was ultimately deeply moved by Qiong Yao’s lyrics. The song became a classic after its re-recording.
