Zang Hua Yin(The Song of Burying the Fallen Flowers) is a renowned poem from A Dream of Red Mansions , written by Cao Xueqin and recited through the voice of the character Lin Daiyu. Later, it was composed into a song by composer Wang Liping and performed by Chen Li, becoming one of the most iconic interludes in the 1987 TV series adaptation of A Dream of Red Mansions . Meanwhile, this poem has been adapted into various instrumental versions. Among them, the dongxiao version, with its plaintive and mournful timbre, is hailed as "the most expressive rendition of Lin Daiyu’s sorrow" and stands as a paragon of cross-border integration between Chinese classical music and literature. Among all dongxiao adaptations, the version rearranged and performed by Tan Yanjian is the most celebrated. Its highly lyrical flute tones perfectly convey the tragic emotions embedded in the piece, earning it the reputation among music lovers as "the pinnacle of dongxiao interpretations".
There are numerous versions of The Song of Burying the Fallen Flowers , but given that the dongxiao version is undoubtedly a must-listen for most Chinese flute and dongxiao enthusiasts, this sheet music is based on Tan Yanjian’s dongxiao solo version. The original key is
Fmajor, and it can be played on anF-keyeddizi using the fundamental fingering of5. Technically, a bassF-keyeddizi is preferred, though it is not commonly available—anF-keyedsoprano dizi is also usable, albeit with a relatively higher pitch. However, the performance effect can be significantly enhanced by transposing the accompaniment up by two or four keys, then playing it on a bassG-keyedor bassA-keyeddizi (opt for the largest size possible). Additionally, tightening the flute membrane (or replacing it with masking tape) will further improve the sound quality. Of course, performing the piece on anF-keyeddongxiao will yield the most authentic and optimal effect.
