Tao Sheng Yi Jiu(The Sound of Billows) is a classic masterpiece by Chinese mainland male singer Mao Ning. Released in 1993, it is included in his debut solo album Please Let My Feelings Stay by Your Side . The song was written and composed by Chen Xiaoqi, with its lyrics inspired by Night Mooring by Maple Bridge by Zhang Ji, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. It blends the loneliness of a thousand years with modern melancholy, retaining the profound charm of ancient poetry while conveying delicate emotions about the passage of time and changes in feelings. On the surface, it tells a love story, but in essence, it reflects the confusion and identity anxiety of a generation caught between traditional and modern cultures in the early days of China's reform and opening-up, allowing listeners to feel a resonance that transcends time and space through its melody.
The Sound of Billows became popular across the country immediately after its release, serving as Mao Ning's "breakthrough hit" and catapulting him to become a representative figure of the "Mainland Prince of Love Songs" in the 1990s. In 1994, the song won multiple awards, including Top 10 Golden Songs at the "China Original Music Chart" and Most Popular Song at the "Oriental Billboard". It has become one of the iconic works in the Chinese music scene of the 1990s and is still widely sung today.
