Li Hua Song(Ode to Pear Blossoms) is the core theme song of the newly compiled symphonic Peking Opera The Legend of the Concubine of the Tang Dynasty (2001), with lyrics by Weng Sizai, music by Yang Nailing, and first performed by Mei Baojiu, a descendant of the Mei School of Peking Opera. As a landmark work of original "opera-style songs" (a fusion of traditional opera and modern music), it deeply integrates the charm of traditional Peking Opera with modern symphonic music. Boasting elegant lyrics, a melodious tune, and profound cultural connotations, it has become a classic crossing the boundaries of traditional opera and popular music, and a pivotal example of the modernization and innovation of Peking Opera.
The creation of the song originated from Mei Baojiu’s vision of modernizing his father Mei Lanfang’s classic operas. In 2001, Mei Baojiu took the lead in adapting Mei Lanfang’s Legend of Yang Guifei and Drunken Beauty into the symphonic Peking Opera The Legend of the Concubine of the Tang Dynasty . The composition of the theme song hit a snag at one point, and Yang Nailing was entrusted with the task of composing it at a critical juncture. He borrowed A Collection of Mei Lanfang’s Arias overnight for inspiration, rooted the work in Peking Opera rhythms, and completed the composition in just one night. On November 3, 2001, The Legend of the Concubine of the Tang Dynasty premiered in Shanghai, and Ode to Pear Blossoms made its debut as the theme song, quickly garnering widespread attention.
