The Chinese lyrics, written by netizens based on an original story, make it a secondary creation. As an adapted work, it has been covered by many singers, with versions by Lon, Shuang Sheng, and Yi Dong being particularly well-known. While each version features distinct vocal styles, they all preserve the original melody's mournful tone. Lon was the first to perform A Taoist Nun Friend of Mine , and her interpretation, marked by intense emotion, powerfully conveys the Taoist nun's profound wounds and heart-wrenching anguish.
From the first-person perspective of the "Taoist nun", the lyrics tell a poignant love story that starts with a spark of affection but ends in missed opportunities: When the Taoist nun first met the scholar, the long street was filled with the warmth of spring. The scholar smiled and said, "Once I achieve success, I will marry you". She cherished the keepsake and waited bitterly for years, only to witness the scholar marrying someone else at a wedding banquet later. It turned out that the promise was merely a misunderstanding, and her deep affection ultimately remained unrequited.
