It was released on September 25, 1986, and included in the original soundtrack album Original Soundtrack of the TV Series Journey to the West . This instrumental piece, devoid of lyrics, blends electric instruments (e.g., electric guitar, electronic drums), orchestral arrangements, and traditional Chinese folk music, pioneering a new era in Chinese TV drama scoring at the time.
The piece originally lacked an official title and was simply referred to as the "Journey to the West Overture" or "Prelude".
