Su Wu Mu Yang(Su Wu Herds Sheep) is a bamboo flute piece at the second-level, rich in historical and cultural connotations. Its content is based on the story of Su Wu, an envoy of the Han Dynasty, who was sent on a diplomatic mission to the Xiongnu. Su Wu was dispatched to the Xiongnu with the imperial credentials, but was detained by them. The Xiongnu tried to force and entice him to surrender on many occasions, yet Su Wu remained steadfast and unyielding. Later, he was exiled to the north of the sea (now Lake Baikal) to herd sheep. The Xiongnu threatened that he could only return to the Han Dynasty when a male sheep gave birth to a lamb. However, despite the extremely harsh conditions, after nineteen long years, Su Wu still maintained his loyalty to the Han Dynasty and finally managed to return to his hometown.
The melody of Su Wu Mu Yang(Su Wu Herds Sheep) usually features a solemn, tragic, and profound style, while also containing an unwavering strength. For learners at the second-level of bamboo flute playing, the rhythm poses a certain challenge. For example, the technical difficulty of dotted half - notes requires performers to have good rhythm - sense and control ability.
