Huan Qin(Pleasures) is a Chinese New Style instrumental piece composed in 2003 by Lin Hai, a renowned contemporary Chinese composer. It is included in his 10th solo album Pipa Images and represents a classic fusion of new age music and traditional Chinese folk music. The piece features the pipa as the lead instrument, complemented by responsive accompaniment on the bamboo flute. Its light, witty melody and agile, bouncing rhythm create a vivid scene of children playing in streets and alleys or among spring woods, with strong imagery and emotional appeal.
Although arranged with traditional instruments, the work incorporates modern rhythmic concepts, giving it both classical charm and contemporary appeal, making it a model of “New Chinese Style” music. Thanks to its memorable melody and positive mood, it has been widely used in short videos featuring cute pets, daily healing moments, and Chinese-style transformations, achieving strong viral influence.
The score is mainly in the key of
C, with a middle section modulating toE♭. However, for a solo bamboo flute performance, this section can be treated as an interlude and skipped directly. The piece can then be played on aG-keybamboo flute withall holes closed as 2, avoiding the trouble of changing fingerings or switching flutes.
