Nightingale was composed by Yanni, a Greek-American composer, and included in the live album Tribute in 1997. It gained global fame for its performance at the 1997 Forbidden City Concert.
During his sojourn in Venice, Yanni was touched by the chirping of a nightingale at his window at sunset. Enchanted by its melodious song, he long attempted to recreate its ethereal timbre through music but struggled to find an instrument to mimic the sound. Later in China, he discovered the bamboo flute and found its tone remarkably similar to the nightingale’s, thus deciding to use it as the lead instrument for Nightingale . The piece also draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Nightingale , where a nightingale heals the Chinese emperor with its song. Yanni reconstructs the philosophical theme of "nature and humanity" through his music.
