Haru yo, Koi is a classic J‑POP work created in 1994 by Yumi Matsutoya, known as the “Queen of Japanese New Music”. Released as the theme song for the NHK morning drama of the same name, it is included in the album The Dancing Sun . Written and composed by Yumi Matsutoya herself and arranged by her husband Masataka Matsutoya, the song has become a timeless landmark in Japanese music thanks to its warm, healing melody and delicate, poetic lyrics.
Using seasonal imagery such as sudden spring rains and daphne flowers, the song constructs three layers of meaning: spring in reality, warm spring in memory, and new spring in the future. It vividly expresses emotions woven from longing, waiting, and hope. It has not only been selected for Japanese middle school textbooks in both Japanese language and music classes but also become a staple at school graduation ceremonies. In a 2014 MUSIC STATION nationwide poll of beloved spring songs, it ranked second.
