The Shepherd in Koktokay a Mandarin pop folk song written, composed and performed by Wang Qi. Released on May 8, 2020, it quickly went viral online for its sincere, touching emotions and strong Western Chinese style. It gained nationwide fame after being performed at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in 2021.
Set in Koktokay, Xinjiang, the song tells a poignant love story about a shepherd and a beekeeper who fall in love but are forced apart by reality. The two wanderers meet on the grasslands dotted with flowers; the shepherd offers goat milk and the beekeeper gives honey, and love gradually grows between them. However, the beekeeper, who has two children, does not want to burden her lover. She leaves quietly on a rainy night and asks someone to lie that she has married far away in Yili. The devoted shepherd stays in Koktokay, waiting for his beloved to return. With simple and affectionate lyrics paired with a melodious tune, the song vividly expresses the persistence of love and the helplessness of reality. It also made Xinjiang place names such as Koktokay and Nalati widely known, becoming a hit work with strong emotional resonance and cultural influence.
