There are many types of bamboo flutes. Commonly used ones in accompanying singing and dancing, ensemble of traditional Chinese musical instruments, and solo flute performances include Qudi flutes in the keys of
AD, Qudi flutes in the keys ofBE, Qudi flutes in the keys ofCF, and Bangdi flutes in the keys ofDG. Beginners can first choose to purchase a Bangdi flute in the key ofCF, or a Qudi flute in the key ofAD.
The bamboos used to make bamboo flutes vary in thickness, thinness, length, shortness, tenderness, and maturity. Coupled with the manual steps in the flute-making process, this leads to differences in the timbre, tone color, and pitch accuracy of the flutes. Relatively speaking, having a good flute allows one to play music more beautifully. So, how can one select a good flute?
- First and foremost, pitch accuracy is of utmost importance. When choosing a flute, for beginners, it is advisable to find a bamboo flute teacher to help you distinguish the pitch accuracy of the flute.
- Second, observe the original color of the bamboo, that is, the color before it is painted. Old bamboo is generally yellow and has been air-dried to a certain extent with low water content. Therefore, after being made into a flute, there are relatively small changes in pitch accuracy and tone color. On the other hand, "tender bamboo" is greenish in color. If a flute made of such bamboo is played for a long time, the bamboo will shrink, which will affect the tone color and pitch accuracy.
- Third, check the inner diameter of the flute. Select a flute with a round and straight inner diameter, and make sure there are no factors such as wormholes or cracks.
- Finally, also consider the grain of the bamboo and the quality of the material. Generally, a flute with fine bamboo grain, solid material, a round and straight tube body, and even thickness at both ends will have a better tone color.
For beginners, if they are just playing for fun as an amateur, there is no need to be too demanding about the tone color. As long as the tone color and pitch accuracy are average, it can achieve the purpose of practice. Later, when they are more familiar with playing, they can buy a better flute. In short, by considering one's own situation comprehensively, one can select a flute that suits oneself.
