Xiao Ao Jiang Hu Qu(The Melody of Laughing Proud Wanderer) is a core musical element in Jin Yong's martial arts novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer . Its creative inspiration stems from the story in the novel where "Qu Yang and Liu Zhengfeng" break through sectarian prejudices through music. In the novel, this melody was co-created by Qu Yang, an elder of the Demonic Sect, and Liu Zhengfeng of the Hengshan School. It integrates the rhythms of the guqin (Chinese zither) and xiao (vertical bamboo flute), embedding the lingering notes of Guangling San (Guangling Melody) , symbolizing the martial arts world's ideal of transcending worldly conventions. After film and television adaptations (such as the 1996 Lu Songxian version and the 2001 Li Yapeng version), its melody has become one of the iconic symbols of martial arts culture.
Instruments primarily feature the guqin (symbolizing ancient artistic conception) and xiao (conveying distant desolation), supplemented by traditional instruments like the guzheng and pipa, creating an auditory atmosphere of "chivalrous valor and tender affection, alongside the vastness of the martial arts realm". The melody is composed using the pentatonic scale (
Gong,Shang,Jue,Zhi,Yu), characterized by smooth rhythms and oriental charm. The climax is impassioned, while the low points are gentle and lingering, echoing the free-spiritedness and tragedy of "laughing proudly in the 江湖" (martial world) depicted in the novel.Due to possible confusion or misinformation in music usage across some adapted films and TV series, part of the audience mistakenly identifies The Melody of Laughing Proud Wanderer as The Pure Heart Goodness Incantation . As this error became commonplace, The Pure Heart Goodness Incantation gradually emerged as another deeply ingrained name for The Melody of Laughing Proud Wanderer .
