Ba Qiao Liu(Baqiao Willow) is an artistic classic that carries a thousand years of parting sorrow, created in the 1980s with lyrics by the renowned lyricist Chen Xiaoqi and music composed by the national first-class composer Wu Songjin. The song skillfully integrates elements of Shaanxi local opera (Qinqiang) with modern music composition techniques, earning it a reputation as one of the representative works of "modern classical poetry songs".
The inspiration for Baqiao Willow comes from the famous farewell customs of ancient China. Xi'an's Baqiao was a necessary passage east of Chang'an since the Han Dynasty, where ancient people would often break off willow branches as gifts to express their reluctance to part. The melody of the song draws on the modal characteristics of Qinqiang's "bitter tone," with its mournful and sorrowful pitch fluctuations, making it particularly suited for expressing grief and longing. Although it did not become a mainstream popular hit due to the era, its artistic height is highly recognized in the music industry. In addition to Zhang Mi's original version, cover versions by singers such as Lu Ping each have their own distinct characteristics—Lu Ping's interpretation emphasizes the clear and graceful style of Jiangnan, forming a sharp contrast with Zhang Mi's vigorous rendition, further enriching the song's expressive dimension and making it a "treasured piece" among professional vocal learners and classical music enthusiasts.
