Mei Li De Cao Yuan Wo De Jia(Beautiful Prairie is My Home) is a profoundly influential classic Chinese Mongolian folk song. With lyrics by Huo Hua and music composed by Alateng Aole, it was first performed in 1978 by mezzo-soprano singer Dedema. It was later selected by UNESCO for inclusion in the Asia-Pacific Song Collection and chosen as one of the "100 Outstanding Songs Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China". The song, renowned for its poetic lyrics and melodious tune, depicts the magnificent scenery of the Inner Mongolian grasslands and the happy life of the herdsmen. It has become an iconic symbol of grassland culture and a treasure of Chinese musical heritage.
The song was initially created in 1975. Lyricist Huo Hua immersed himself in the life of the East Ujimqin Banner of Xilingol League, living with herdsmen for over ten days. Deeply moved by the "lush green grass and dancing butterflies" of the prairie, he found inspiration for his creation. The initial draft, reflecting the era's context, included phrases like "Daqing" and "Dazhai", characteristic of the time, and was prepared as a soprano solo for a performance festival, thus having limited reach. Later, after composer Alateng Aole rearranged the music and following suggestions from overseas Chinese, the lyrics were revised into a purely "green song" praising homeland and nature, focusing on natural and human beauty. This ultimately resulted in the classic version we know today, with lines like "The wind sweeps over green grass, flowers everywhere bloom".
Over the decades, this song has become a model of grassland songs, reinterpreted by numerous artists and singers. Among them, Han Lei, Dao Lang, the Black Duck Combinatio, Gong Yue, Wulan Tuya, and Jiangyang Zhuoma have all released their own versions, each with distinct characteristics, continuously expanding the song's influence.
