Cang Hai Yi Sheng Xiao(Laugh over the Vast Sea) reached its peak as soon as it debuted as the theme song of the 1990 film Swordsman . Behind it was the powerful combination of James Wong writing the lyrics and composing the music, and Joseph Koo arranging the music. Inspired by ancient music, James Wong skillfully used the pentatonic scale of "Yu, Zhi, Jiao, Shang, Gong" and completed the first draft in half a day. He made every effort to preserve the original flavor during the recording, thus creating a classic.
In terms of melody, it is full of Chinese classical charm. The pentatonic scale makes the rhythm free and easy, and shows its heroic spirit vividly. Just like the lines "沧海一声笑", with the combination of simple musical notes, the uninhibited and open-minded feeling of the Jianghu (martial arts world) comes rushing towards you. Sam Hui has a thick and free voice. When he sings "滔滔两岸潮", the accurate use of lingering sounds and changes in dynamics vividly interprets the magnificent and vicissitudes feeling of the Jianghu.
The lyrics are even more remarkable. At the beginning, "沧海笑,滔滔两岸潮,浮沉随浪只记今朝" The sea is like the Jianghu, and a laugh shows the heroic spirit. The tides imply the changes of the situation, and also reveal an open-minded attitude of taking things as they come. "苍生笑,不再寂寥,豪情仍在痴痴笑笑" It adds warmth to the Jianghu and fully shows the heroic demeanor of not changing despite the vicissitudes of life, being optimistic and chivalrous.
The bamboo flute version of Laugh over the Vast Sea is also full of the atmosphere of the Jianghu, giving people a feeling of excitement. It is deeply loved by a large number of new and old bamboo flute enthusiasts. The score of this piece corresponds to the classic version sung by Sam Hui. The original key is
A♭
major. You can play it with anE♭
flute, taking the tube tone as2
. However, it is more common to play it in a higher key with anE
flute.
