Bu Lao Meng is a Chinese ancient-style song with lyrics and liner notes by Mu Qingming, composed and performed by Yin Lin, and arranged by Hui Yuanqiong. Released on July 17, 2016, it is included in Yin Lin's solo album Zilch Over the Tide . With its exquisite lyrics, melodious tune and profound emotions, the song has become a classic in the Chinese ancient-style music scene, maintaining a prominent position on the ancient-style music charts of major music platforms and spawning countless cover versions, adaptations and secondary creations.
The song draws its inspiration from the Huainan-Hengshan Case that took place in the first year of Yuanshou during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty (122 BC). It tells a tragic love story between Liu Xuan, a princess of the Huainan Kingdom, and Han Jin, a talented scholar. Their love was doomed when Liu Xuan's clan was involved in a rebellion plot, leading her to be imprisoned. Desperate to see Liu Xuan, Han Jin knelt and banged his head on the gate of the Weiyang Palace until his forehead bled, yet his plea was still rejected by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. Liu Xuan eventually died in prison, and in memory of their love that never reached old age, Han Jin built a tomb for her in the Zhongnan Mountains and named it "Bu Lao".
