Jin Cheng Wang Shi(Jincheng Memories) is an erhu-pipa duet centered on the regional culture of Shanxi Province. Composed by young composer Chen Fei, it was officially released on December 30, 2023. The piece condenses Shanxi’s historical heritage through the character "Jin" (a traditional reference to Shanxi) and weaves together memories of bygone years with the term "Past". By blending traditional folk music with modern aesthetics, it has become a phenomenal work in the field of Guofeng music (Chinese-style music) in recent years, striking a broad chord across online platforms.
The title’s "Jincheng" does not specifically refer to Jincheng City in Shanxi; instead, it is an iconic expression of Shanxi’s overall culture. Though not a native of Jincheng, Chen Fei, through in-depth research on Shanxi’s music (such as Jinju Opera and folk songs), integrated the grandeur of the Taihang Mountains and the delicacy of the Fen River’s flow into the melody. The erhu, with its mellow tone like the Fen River’s waters, unfolds the cultural context of the three historical "Jin" regions (ancient Shanxi); the pipa, bright as the morning light over the Taihang Mountains, outlines the contours of the land and rivers. Their interplay creates an auditory picture of "mountains and rivers within and without" (a traditional description of Shanxi’s terrain). The piece retains the elegant essence of traditional folk music while showcasing narrative tension through varying rhythm density. Despite having no lyrics, its gentle and melodious tune evokes cross-regional resonance. Many listeners have commented: "When I hear Jincheng Memories , I think of the alleys in my hometown, my grandmother’s craftsmanship, and the nostalgia hidden deep in my memories."
