Hongyan is a traditional folk song originating from Inner Mongolia, China. It can be traced back to the long-tune folk songs of the Urat tribe in the Qing Dynasty. Its melody is desolate and distant, and the lyrics use the image of "hongyan" (wild goose) to express the deep feelings of homesickness of wandering sons and the separation from relatives and friends. It is a classic representative of the themes of "man and nature, emotion and return journey" in Mongolian music.
In 2005, the adapted version performed by the Mongolian singer Husileng on the stage of CCTV's Avenue of Stars made Hongyan widely known. Later, cover versions by singers such as Han Hong and Tan Weiwei, as well as the spread through variety shows like I Am a Singer , have made it a "national-level" hit song across ethnic groups and regions.
With a melody of "Hongyan", it conveys a multitude of homesickness. From a pastoral song in the depth of the grassland to a popular golden song nationwide, Hongyan carries the most profound emotions with the simplest melody. It is the gaze of wandering sons looking back at their hometowns, the flowing blood of ethnic culture, and the eternal charm of music transcending time and space. Whenever it is listened to, the line "The wild goose heads south" can always awaken the gentle yearning in people's hearts for distant places and their places of return.
