Gan Wen Lu Zai He Fang(Where Is the Road) is the ending song of the 1986 TV series Journey to the West produced by China Central Television. In the winter of 1983, the composer Xu Jingqing was invited to work on the music creation for this TV series. One day, when he was taking the No. 332 bus at Beijing Zoo, the scene outside the window inspired him. After getting off the bus, he wrote down the melody on a cigarette box with a pencil borrowed from a primary school student. After revisions, the musical score was completed.
The melody is vigorous and expansive, with a popular tune and a strong national style. The lyrics "你挑着担,我牵着马;迎来日出,送走晚霞。踏平坎坷成大道,斗罢艰险又出发……" vividly depict the arduous journey of the four disciples of Tang Seng on their way to obtain Buddhist scriptures in the Western Paradise. The lyrics are full of philosophy, fully revealing an outlook on life that defies difficulties. They not only summarize the indomitable spirit of the four characters in Journey to the West during their journey to obtain scriptures, but also sing out the spirit of the Chinese nation.Once this song was released along with the TV series Journey to the West , it was widely sung across the country and became a classic memory for generations.
