Jiu'er is the theme song and ending theme of the 2014 classic TV series Red Sorghum directed by Zheng Xiaolong. Its lyrics were co-polished by renowned composer A Kun and He Qiling, while the entire melody was independently composed by A Kun. The track was first officially included in the album Red Sorghum (Original TV Series Soundtrack) . Han Hong and Hu Shasha successively released the official premiere vocal versions. Later, a host of powerhouse vocalists including Tan Jing, Sa Dingding and Wu Bixia launched cover versions with distinct styles one after another. It is not only a widely sung hit soundtrack in China, but also a red classic music work that carries profound national sentiments.
The core lyrics of the entire song consist of merely four short lines, without any redundant embellishment. It unfolds emotions through progressive multiple modulations, and from the first-person narrative perspective, fully integrates Jiu'er's resolute and forbearing character, her life full of ups and downs, as well as the inseparable love and hatred into the melody. This song is also a highly popular performance piece deeply loved by Chinese folk music enthusiasts. During performance, the tune transitions from key A to key B, and finally rises to key E. It can be performed on a B-tuned dizi by sequentially switching the fingering patterns of all holes closed as 6, all holes closed as 5 and all holes closed as 2.
