You Lan Feng Chun(The Spring Orchid) is a classic solo qudi (a kind of low-pitched Chinese bamboo flute) work co-composed by Zhao Songting, the grandmaster of the Southern School of Chinese bamboo flute, and composer Cao Xing. Finalized in 1979, it is also the last original bamboo flute work created in Zhao Songting's artistic career. It is recognized as a representative work for Grade 10 bamboo flute grading examination, and a peak Kunqu Opera-style bamboo flute composition.
The creation of The Spring Orchid carries the creators' profound emotions and the imprint of the times: As the "Jiangnan Flute King" and founder of the Zhejiang School of bamboo flute art, Zhao Songting suffered hardships and was sent to work in the countryside during a special historical period. It was with the direct care of Premier Zhou Enlai that he was able to return to the artistic stage, so Zhao had always held deep gratitude to Premier Zhou. In 1979, right after the end of the special period, Kunqu Opera, as a traditional Chinese art form, regained its vitality for development. Since Premier Zhou once praised Kunqu Opera as "an orchid", Zhao Songting collaborated with Cao Xing to create this piece. The work eulogizes Premier Zhou's noble character through the metaphor of an orchid in a secluded valley blooming again with fragrance, and also conveys the creators' joy of gaining artistic rebirth after going through hardships, as well as their expectation for the new era and new prospects. It is a work full of the power of hope and rebirth.
The original key of this composition changes from E♭ to C major, and it is performed with a C-key qudi, switching from the fingering of all holes covered as 3 to all holes covered as 5.
