Wei Shui Qiu Ge(Autumn Melody by the Wei River) is a solo bamboo flute piece rich in the local cultural characteristics of Shaanxi Province. Originally composed by Wang Xiangjian, a renowned bamboo flute performer and composer, it was adapted by his disciple Li Xiaozhou and arranged by musician Sun Xia. The piece is included in the album Li Xiaozhou Bamboo Flute Performance Album, released in 2016.
The original version of Wei Shui Qiu Ge was created around 2007. Drawing on Shaanxi folk music and the tonal patterns of Qinqiang (the traditional opera of Shaanxi), Mr. Wang Xiangjian used the unique timbre of the bamboo flute to depict the magnificent autumn scenery along the Wei River Basin and the cultural landscape of the "Three Qin Lands" (the historical name for the Shaanxi region). The adagio (slow section) adopts the string music melody Yongshou An from Qinqiang, which sounds plaintive and soulful, carrying deep sorrow; the allegro (fast section) incorporates the Xianqiang music (a local folk music genre) from Heyang County, Shaanxi, which is passionate, bold, and full of vitality. The entire piece weaves together multiple emotions—nostalgia for one’s homeland, the loneliness of wandering, admiration for nature, and reflections on history—and is praised as "a melody of homesickness, filled with endless tenderness". Additionally, it is one of the essential pieces for bamboo flute enthusiasts and has been included in numerous professional teaching materials and music score collections.
The music score is in the key of C, and the piece can be performed using a C-key bamboo flute with the fundamental tone of 5.
