Xi Yi Ge(The Washing Song) is a classic red song with strong folk characteristics of the Tibetan ethnic group. Written by Li Junchen (lyrics) and composed by Luo Nianyi, it was created in 1964. Originally, it served as the core interlude of the large-scale song and dance drama Washing Song produced by the Art Troupe of the Tibet Military Region. Later, with its cheerful melody and distinctive ethnic style, it became a timeless masterpiece widely sung across generations.
Rooted in the rhythm of Tibetan Guozhuang Dance (a traditional Tibetan folk dance) and integrated with the tones of plateau folk songs, the song features a lively, brisk, and exuberant melody. Its lyrics vividly depict the profound bond between the military and the people, as well as the joy of Tibetan people in their labor, radiating a simple yet powerful ethnic appeal. Having endured for over half a century, the song remains enduringly popular and has spawned numerous vocal and instrumental versions with diverse styles.
