The bamboo flute version of Meng Li(In My Dream) is the most iconic instrumental interlude from My Fair Princess II (also known as Princess Pearl II_). Composed and performed by the renowned Taiwanese musician Li Zhengfan, it is included in the soundtrack album _My Fair Princess: Complete Music Collection . As a signature background score for scenes featuring Ziwei (a main character) being injured or emotional moments in the drama, it is hailed as a "classic more emotionally resonant than the vocal version".
The original song, with lyrics by Qiongyao (the drama’s screenwriter), was a soulful duet performed by Ruby Lin and Zhou Jie. In contrast, the bamboo flute solo version boasts a mellow and rich tone that perfectly aligns with the original song’s sorrowful mood. Compared to the vocal version, the flute adaptation removes the directness of human vocals, instead adding more room for interpretation and imagination. It transforms this sorrowful, tangled, and bittersweet song into a gentler, more romantic piece—allowing listeners to more easily immerse themselves in the drama and feel the deep emotional fluctuations of the characters.
The sheet music is primarily in the key of E, with multiple key shifts between E and G throughout the piece. For this reason, the simplest and most convenient way to perform it is using a D-key bamboo flute with the fundamental tone as 4 (no half-hole fingering required for this piece), then switching to fundamental tone as 2. Alternatively, it can also be played using an E-key bamboo flute with a shift from fundamental tone as 5 to fundamental tone as 3, or by combining an E-key bamboo flute (with fundamental tone as 5) and a D-key bamboo flute (with fundamental tone as 2).
