Yin Xiang Shan Bei(Impressions of Northern Shaanxi) is a duet for erhu (a two-stringed bowed instrument) and pipa (a four-stringed plucked instrument). Composed by the renowned musician Chen Fei and performed by Gao Yang, it was created in 2023. As part of a regional cultural suite centered on Shanxi and Northern Shaanxi provinces—paired with Jincheng Memories — this piece serves as the "Northern Shaanxi chapter" of the suite. With its unique musical language, the work integrates the grandeur and majesty of the Loess Plateau with the profound cultural heritage of Northern Shaanxi. Hailed as a "Northern Shaanxi landscape painted with musical notes", it also stands as a representative work that has helped "break the boundaries" of traditional Chinese instrumental music.
The melody of Impressions of Northern Shaanxi is resounding and melodious, characterized by wide intervals and dramatic rises and falls—evoking the rolling gullies and ridges of the Loess Plateau. It conveys the unbridled spirit of "Xintianyou" (a traditional folk song genre of Northern Shaanxi) and incorporates the lively rhythms of local folk music, such as the Ansai waist drum. These elements vividly embody the bold and straightforward character of the people in Northern Shaanxi.
