Pianpian is an original song released by Dao Lang on July 19, 2023. Included in his album Shange Liaozai , it features Dao Lang as the sole composer, lyricist, arranger, and vocalist. Blending classical literature with modern music, this work has become a phenomenal hit in the Chinese music industry since its release, thanks to its profound connotations and unique artistic expression.
The creative inspiration for Pianpian comes from the eponymous story in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (written by Pu Songling, a literary figure of the Qing Dynasty). The original tale narrates a poignant yet ultimately sorrowful love affair between Luo Sheng, a down-and-out wanderer, and Pianpian, a celestial maiden. Rather than simply retelling the story, the song distills its core motifs of decadence and redemption, illusion and reality. Additionally, Dao Lang subtly weaves in the legend of Lan Caihe—one of the Eight Immortals in Chinese mythology—into the lyrics. This echoes the song’s theme of transcending worldly trivialities and cherishing time, further enriching its philosophical depth.
