Ru Guo Dang Shi(If at That Time) is a signature masterpiece of Chinese singer-songwriter Xu Song. Released on January 10, 2009, it was included in his debut self-written and self-produced album Custom-made . Centered on the theme of "regrets of youthful love", the song combines delicate narrative lyrics with lyricism imbued in classical poetic imagery. It emerged as a phenomenal Chinese-style pop hit in the early era of internet music, earning Xu Song the reputation as a "musical poet". A long-standing fixture on Chinese-style pop charts, it remains a timeless classic model for Chinese-style pop composition in the Chinese music scene to this day.
In 2020, Xu Song released If at That Time 2020 , a revamped version infused with elements of Huangmei Opera, incorporating an excerpt from the classic Huangmei Opera The Heavenly Match . While retaining the core melody and emotional essence of the original, this updated rendition sparked another wave of popularity for Chinese-style music. On January 13, 2024, at the Jinan stop of Jane Zhang’s "Light" world tour, Xu Song took the stage as a guest performer. Their impromptu collaboration on If at That Time gave birth to the iconic stage moment hailed as the "Million-dollar Harmonies", bringing the song to an entirely new dimension of interpretation.
To facilitate bamboo flute performances, this music score is adapted from Jane Zhang’s collaborative version, which is essentially a cover of If at That Time 2020 . Set in the key of E♭, it can be played on an E♭-tuned bamboo flute using the fingering method of all holes covered = note 5.
