Luzhou Moon is a classic Chinese-style song written, composed and performed by Xu Song. Included in his 2010 album Seek for Mist Revelation, it was first released on his official platform in December 2009 and quickly gained popularity, becoming one of his representative works.
The song draws its inspiration from Xu Song's homesickness after leaving his hometown Luzhou (now Hefei City, Anhui Province). At that time, having just departed from his native place, he was moved by the sight of the moon by the East Lake in Wuhan — recalling old friends and past events under the same moonlight back home. Weaving in classical literary images such as "chisel a hole in the wall to steal light for reading" and "red peonies by the bridge", he infused the melody and lyrics with nostalgia and regrets over time. By adapting the melancholy sentiment of Nalan Xingde’s line "At that time, I only took it for granted", the song conveys more sincere and profound emotions. Told from the perspective of a wanderer, it expresses longing for hometown and sighs for the passing of time. With its graceful melody, delicate emotions and lyrics rich in classical charm, it strikes a deep chord with listeners and remains widely sung to this day.
The score is mainly in C major, shifting to C♯ major in the final section. Therefore, a complete performance requires switching from a C-keyed bamboo flute to a C♯-keyed bamboo flute, both using the fundamental fingering of 5.
