Shan Hu Song(Ode to Coral) is a household classic red folk song in China. As the core aria of the opera Red Coral , it was written by Zhao Zhong, Zhong Yibing and other lyricists, composed by Hu Shiping and Wang Xiren, and first performed by Zhao Yunqing. It officially debuted in 1961 along with the opera's public performance. Taking corals in the South China Sea as a metaphor, the song eulogizes the perseverance and patriotic feelings of female militia on the islands. With its melodious and stirring tune as well as simple yet profound lyrics, it has remained popular for decades, becoming a landmark work in the history of Chinese national vocal music and a collective memory of several generations.
