Flowers and Youth is a classic folk piece rooted in the “Hua’er” folk song tradition of the Huanghe-Huangshui River Basin in Qinghai. It was jointly created by Zhu Zhonglu, Lü Bing and Zhang Minxin in 1956. Originally composed as accompaniment for the lyrical dance drama of the same name, it draws material from traditional Qinghai folk ditties and stands as the most widely known representative work of “Hua’er”, an intangible cultural heritage folk song genre of Northwest China.
Composed in the minor pentatonic yu mode, the tune features bright, flowing melodies and light, agile rhythms, carrying the fresh, unrestrained rustic charm of the Northwest Plateau. “Hua’er” refers to a unique style of mountain folk song indigenous to Northwest China; locally, young women are called “Hua’er” (flowers) and young men “Shaonian” (youths). The composition depicts pure, tender affection between young men and women, employing vivid metaphor and symbolic imagery with strong grassroots appeal. Premiered at the National Music and Dance Festival in 1957, it was later selected for performance at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow. It quickly gained nationwide popularity and has been extensively arranged for a wide range of instruments.
