Triple Tonguing Practice

Triple tonguing is a combination of single tonguing and double tonguing. It is mainly used in fast-paced performances and is also commonly used in pieces that simulate the sound of horses' hooves. The articulation rhythm of this piece is tu tu ku instead of tu ku tu from the very beginning. However, in order to maintain a better sense of rhythm during practice, the usual way of practicing is tu, tu ku tu, tu ku tu....
When practicing triple tonguing, the movement of the tongue should be accurate and clear, avoiding unclear articulation. Pay attention to the control of the breath, maintaining a stable airflow and rhythm, and avoid affecting the quality of the articulation due to insufficient breath.
In line with the principle of "using large flutes to practice breath control and small flutes to practice the movement of the mouth", triple tonguing should preferably be practiced with a small flute as much as possible. Generally speaking, for beginners, it is recommended to start practicing at a slower speed, such as around 60 - 80 BPM. As proficiency improves, the speed can be gradually increased to between 120 - 160 BPM, which can better train the triple tonguing technique. Of course, for some professional performers or according to the requirements of specific pieces, a higher BPM may be achieved.
