Bai Ma(White Steed) is a contemporary classic instrumental piece for the horsehead fiddle (Morin Khuur), composed by Aorigele, a renowned Mongolian performer. It was officially released in 2014 as part of his solo album Love , and has since become one of the most popular grassland instrumental works featured on modern Chinese folk music stages.
Centered on the Mongolian horse as its creative theme, the piece opens with deep, resonant melodies that instantly transport listeners into an expansive, boundless grassland landscape. As the tempo picks up, the music conjures vivid imagery of a white stallion galloping across the plains. Blending lyrical tenderness with powerful vigor, the composition leverages signature performing techniques unique to the Morin Khuur to mimic pounding hooves and horse neighs, vividly recreating a spectacular scene of thousands of horses racing across the steppe. It captures the breathtaking grandeur of grassland scenery while embodying the fearless, persevering spirit of the Mongolian horse, conveying the Mongolian people’s deep affection for the grasslands and their steeds, alongside their longing for a fulfilling life.
The original key of this piece is C♯ major. It can be performed on an A♭ key bamboo flute with the lowest note as 2. A far more common alternative is transposing the accompaniment up or down by one semitone for performance on a small A or G key bamboo flute; the piece also works excellently as an etude for staccato practice.
