The Last of the Mohicans is an epic pure music piece that blends North American Indigenous musical styles with modern arrangement. Originally composed by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman as the soundtrack for the 1992 film of the same name, it was later adapted and performed by Alexandro Querevalú, a Peruvian Indigenous musician.
Opening with deep, resonant drumbeats, the piece pairs the bright and clear main melody played on the quena with the long-drawn, ethereal harmonies of the panpipes, creating an auditory atmosphere like a lone cry echoing across the wilderness. Dominated by a minor key, the melody features a steady and powerful rhythm. It is infused with both the melancholy and compassion for the decline of Indigenous American civilizations, and the unyielding spirit of the native peoples. Alexandro’s street performance version of the piece has achieved exceptional popularity—dressed in traditional Indigenous attire, he uses an original, unadulterated playing style to convey the weight of history and intense emotions to the audience, striking a deep chord straight to the soul.
The sheet music is in F major. The original version was performed on the quena, whose timbre is similar to that of the dongxiao (Chinese end-blown flute). Therefore, the piece can be played on an F-keyed dongxiao using the fundamental fingering of 5. It can also be performed on a G-keyed dongxiao or a bass G-keyed dizi (Chinese transverse flute) with the fundamental fingering of 6. Of course, using an F-keyed dizi covered with thick bamboo membrane (or masking tape) is also a simple yet excellent alternative.
