The song Yue Man Xi Lou(Moon Over the West Chamber) is adapted from To the Tune of A Twig of Mume Blossoms: The Fragrant Red Lotus Fades and the Jade Mat Chills in Autumn by Li Qingzhao, a distinguished poetess of the Song Dynasty. Penned as an expression of longing for her husband Zhao Mingcheng, the poem is hailed as a masterpiece of the Graceful and Restrained School of Ci poetry. In 1987, when the 1987 TV series A Dream of Red Mansions was sweeping the nation, An Wen rose to fame with her vivid portrayal of the character Qingwen. Touched deeply by the emotion conveyed in the line "One's longing, two hearts' shared sorrow" from the poem, composer Su Yue decided to set the verses to music and have his wife An Wen perform the song. It was later included in her album Thinking of You Always in the Rainy Season .
With classical poetic rhythm as its backbone and modern pop elements incorporated, the song features a minimalist yet sophisticated arrangement. It creates a quiet, lonely atmosphere of "drinking alone under the moon, pining for a distant beloved", and is praised as "the most poignant modern rendition that captures the essence of longing in Li Qingzhao's poem". Especially after An Wen suffered the loss of Su Yue, when she sang the song again, the emotions expressed in the lyrics resonated as a reflection of her own fate, adding a touch of fateful sorrow to the piece.
For ease of performance, the sheet music has omitted the long introductory section. The piece is in B♭ major and can be played on a B♭-keyed dizi using the fundamental fingering of 5.
