Mangzhong is a phenomenal national-style(Guofeng) song created by the music team Yin Yue Shi Ting and performed by Zhao Fangjing. Released on June 6, 2019, it quickly swept across the internet and became a cultural symbol of the year. Inspired by "Mangzhong"—one of the 24 Solar Terms in the traditional Chinese calendar—the song skillfully combines the wisdom of traditional farming with the emotions of modern urban life. Through the collision of guzheng (a traditional Chinese zither) melodies and electronic sounds, as well as the coexistence of Buddhist scripture imagery and internet memes, it has pioneered a unique paradigm for "new national-style"(Xin Guofeng) music.
The song starts with the farming imagery from "Timely Rains Arrive at Mangzhong" by Lu You, a poet of the Northern Song Dynasty. It transforms the natural law of "sowing and harvesting" associated with Mangzhong into an allegory about cause and effect in modern romance. Shang Xiaojin, the producer, broke through the framework of traditional national-style music by embedding a guzheng solo into electronic drumbeats. The intro is based on the remaining score of Ni Shang Yu Yi Qu (The Song of Rainbow and Feather Garments, a renowned traditional Chinese melody), while the interlude suddenly shifts to cyberpunk-style sound effects, simulating the faint crackling of a love letter being burned. Zhao Fangjing’s vocals blend the vocal inflections of traditional Chinese opera with pop singing techniques; her switch between chest voice and falsetto is as smooth and clear as "clear spring water hitting stones." This not only preserves the gentle grace of a woman from the Jiangnan region (south of the Yangtze River) but also endows the song with a catchy, viral appeal through her iconic "Wu~" vocalization.
