Luan Hong is a landmark work of new Chinese folk music co-created by renowned dizi (bamboo flute) and xiao (vertical bamboo flute) performer Chen Yue and pianist Ma Ke. Included in the 2005 album of the same name Luan Hong: Xiao and Piano , it has become a benchmark for healing music through the cross-border integration of Oriental dizi/xiao artistic conception and Western piano harmonies. It has long remained on the popularity charts of major music platforms, perfectly catering to the demands for ancient-style music, light music, and spiritual healing.
The title of the piece is derived from Ouyang Xiu's Butterfly Love Flowers (a ci poetry form). It uses Luan Hong as a symbol of fleeting springtime, the impermanence of years, and the difficulty of retaining tender feelings. Instead of directly depicting scenes, the sound of the dizi conveys the artistic conception of drifting and falling through the contrast of solid and void timbres, as well as the ebb and flow of breath. The rests in the dizi/xiao and piano parts form "musical blank spaces," echoing the artistic conception of "emptiness yet fullness" in Chinese calligraphy and painting, while also embodying modern minimalism. It carries the deepest emotions with restrained notes, integrating the Oriental philosophy of "sorrow without grief" into the melody.
