Juan Zhu Lian(Rolling Up the Bead Curtain) is a classic Chinese-style song created and performed by Chinese singer Huo Zun. After its debut on the CCTV variety show Chinese Good Songs in 2014, it quickly gained popularity and became one of the most representative ancient-style works in the contemporary Chinese music scene.
The song title is derived from Wang Bo's Preface to the Tengwang Pavilion in the Tang Dynasty: "Bead curtains roll up the evening rain over Western Hills". The original line depicts the artistic conception of bead curtains gently rolling and evening rain falling, metaphorizing the loneliness and expectation of a boudoir woman. Huo Zun's creative inspiration originated from a poignant love story in a Nordic animated film. Initially intended to compose an Irish-style melody, the final tune leaned more toward Chinese classical charm.
Rolling Up the Bead Curtain reinterprets classical imagery in modern musical language. It not only carries the thousand-year-old theme of "waiting behind the curtain" in boudoir grievances but also becomes a classic bridge between tradition and modernity through Huo Zun's unique island singing style and cross-cultural arrangement.
The sheet music is produced based on Zhou Shen's cover version. The original key is E major, which can be played with a B-flute by taking the closed tone as 2. However, a more common practice is to transpose it up or down by one key, and then play it with a C-flute or B♭-flute by taking the closed tone as 2.
