Wan Qiu(Late Autumn) is a classic song in the Chinese music industry, created in 1988 by Guangdong musician Xu Jianqiang. Originally titled Wish You Keep Your Heart , it was later adapted into a timeless pop hit that spans generations.
Xu Jianqiang drew inspiration from his personal emotional experiences and completed the lyrics and composition in just 15 minutes. The first singer was Guangdong vocalist Chen Rujia. The original version quickly gained popularity through the Pearl River Economic Radio and won the "Top Ten Golden Songs" award on the Music Shockwave chart. In 1989, Hong Kong singer Huang Kaiqin accidentally heard Chen Rujia's performance, purchased the overseas copyright, rearranged the song, and renamed it Late Autumn . The title is derived from the poetic imagery of Wang Wei's Mountain Dwelling in Autumn ("After fresh rain in mountains bare, autumn permeates the evening air"). Huang Kaiqin's Cantonese version, released in 1992, became one of his signature works and was selected into the "30 Cantonese Golden Songs in 30 Years of King of Microphone" list. In 1993, Xu Jianqiang collaborated with lyricist Su La to launch a Mandarin version sung by Mao Ning. This version was widely broadcast through platforms like CCTV, becoming a household love song in mainland China and establishing Guangdong pop music's competitive position against Hong Kong's music scene.
