The creative inspiration of the song Yi Jian Mei(A Branch of Plum Blossom) originates from the traditional Chinese image of "plum blossoms". In the lyrics, the plum blossoms' proud blooming amidst ice and snow symbolizes the loyalty in love and the tenacity of vitality. The composer, Chen Xinyi (Chen Peter), integrates elements of ethnic music with modern pop melodies, endowing the song with a unique lyrical beauty.
The song first gained popularity as the opening theme song of the Taiwanese TV drama A Branch of Plum Blossom in 1984. Later, it became the theme song of the TV drama New Branch of Plum Blossom in 2009 and the movie Goodbye Mr. Loser in 2015. Especially in the movie Goodbye Mr. Loser , the scene where Yin Zheng, who played the role of Yuan Hua, was accompanied by the song with the lyrics "Snowflakes are fluttering" once became a popular internet meme.
The melody of this piece is based on the mode of the seventh-scale
Yumode. It incorporates traditional Chinese musical instruments such as the erhu and the dizi, combining both classical charm and modern lyricism. The musical score is in the key ofB♭, and it can be played with a dizi in the key ofF, using the tube tone of the dizi as2.
