Sai Ma(Horse Racing) is originally an erhu solo composed by Huang Huai. It made its debut at the 4th Shanghai Spring Erhu Solo Competition in 1964. Later, it was adapted for many musical instruments, including the bamboo flute. Inspired by the folk music of the Mongolian people in northern China, the piece depicts the grand lively scene of Mongolian herdsmen celebrating a horse racing festival.
The work makes extensive use of tonguing techniques, including single tonguing, double tonguing, and triple tonguing. These techniques deliver clear, bright, well-articulated notes that vividly imitate the sound of galloping horse hooves. The piece can also be fully regarded as an excellent practice study for tonguing skills.
Dominated by a fast tempo and heavily using eighth notes and sixteenth notes, it creates an intense, fiery atmosphere of a horse race. The standard performing speed is generally between 140 ~ 160 BPM. On special occasions or performed by highly skilled musicians, the tempo can reach 180 BPM or even over 200 BPM.
This music score is in the key of F, and can be played on an F-key bamboo flute with all holes closed as 5.
Notes on key markings in the score:
The symbol ❄ denotes flutter tongue. If you cannot perform flutter tongue, you may replace it with tonguing; mordents can also be substituted with tonguing.
Pay attention to breath marks in the score. When encountering a breath mark, keep the tonguing short and take a quick breath instantly.
Ornamental notes, flutter tongue passages and similar sections may not be marked with T, but they should still start with tonguing; the same rule applies to the beginning of slurred phrases.
Although the score is marked 160 BPM, beginners should practice phrase by phrase starting at 60 or 80 BPM. Do not rush to increase speed. Gradually speed up naturally only after your tone production and rhythm are completely accurate.
