Guanshan Jiu is a hit ancient-style song released in 2018. It was written by Yoki and composed by Yue Jinzhen, with the original vocals performed by Xiao Hun and Chi Xiao. In 2019, Deng Yujun, known by her stage name Dengshenmejun, released a cover version that went viral across the internet, making it one of the iconic works in the ancient-style music circle.
Set against the backdrop of ancient frontier passes, the song blends traditional Chinese folk music with modern arrangement. The prelude is desolate and distant, the verse is gentle and affectionate, and the chorus is powerful and heroic. It depicts the growth and perseverance of a young general and riverside knight: in his youth, he roamed the battlefield with a silver spear, unrestrained and bold; after experiencing wind, snow, smoke and war, he pours wine and drinks alone atop the frontier pass, savouring the vicissitudes of thousands of years. It embodies the passion and heroism of charging through sand and drawing sword to defeat enemies, as well as the profound nostalgia for hometown embodied in old friends a thousand miles away, green mountains till white hair. The interweaving of patriotism and chivalry conveys a spirit of perseverance and sincerity — being lonely yet never alone, unrestrained yet never arrogant.
